Interacting with Apartheid

first_img10 December 2004Visitors to Johannesburg’s remarkable Apartheid Museum are being offered a unique chance to interact personally with exhibits, thanks to the donation of a personal audio system by German company Sennheiser. The system, a first in South Africa, was installed by Sennheiser in mid-November at no cost, says museum operations and public manager Wayde Davy.“Initially, the Johannesburg branch of the company came to sell the system to us, but we had no money”, Davy says. “When the president of the company visited the museum earlier this year, he fell in love with it and decided to donate the system to us.”The Apartheid MuseumJohannesburg’s Apartheid Museum, assembled by a multi-disciplinary team of architects, curators, film-makers, historians and designers, takes the visitor on a powerful emotional journey into South Africa’s past, bringing to life the story of a state-sanctioned system based solely on racial discrimination. The system, called a Guideport, consists of digital receivers that supply visitors with a selected audio programme. The pre-recorded audio information on an exhibit is started automatically through sensors placed strategically at various points within the museum.“The pre-recorded information is transmitted wirelessly from a location within the museum”, explains tour guide Virginia Thobela. “Immediately a visitor starts on his or her tour, small sensors placed near the columns, which bear the principles of the Constitution of South African, activate the receiver to play the audio file corresponding to the exhibit.”The receiver features volume, as well as stop and repeat keys. A headphone jack that fits snugly to the ear completes the system. The gadget can be worn with a belt clip or a lanyard.“The contraption allows visitors to hear what they want to hear and when they want to hear it”, says Thobela. “It allows them to connect emotionally as well as intellectually to the exhibits. Visitors are also allowed leeway to view exhibits at their own pace.”Located about five kilometres south of the Johannesburg city centre near Gold Reef City, the museum is one of the most popular tourist sites in the city, hosting scores of local and foreign visitors each year. It tells the story of apartheid and how the people of South Africa overcame it.Exceptional pictorial and monumental displays depict apartheid scenes, while television monitors continuously beam images of the struggle against the injustices of the apartheid system. The most eerie display is one depicting 131 nooses hanging from the roof, representing political prisoners who were hanged or died in detention during the apartheid era.Isn’t Thobela afraid the new audio system will make people in her profession redundant?“Actually, I have no fear of losing my job as a tour guide in the museum”, Thobela says. “Before the installation of the system, the number of visitors sometimes overwhelmed us. This has taken the pressure off and we can now attend to those who prefer to tour the museum without the use of the system.”Visitors choosing to use the Guideport system pay R15 on top of the R25 entrance fee. They have to leave their passport or identity document at the reception for surety.Davy says the museum received a donation of 50 receivers, each worth R5 000. “The installation of the system cost Sennheiser over R2-million. The museum only paid for the production of the audio tape, which transmits only in English and German.”The museum is currently working on introducing more languages to cater for local people.Visitors have fallen in love with the gadget, says Davy. “From the comments we have received, people find it absolutely fantastic.”Source: City of Johannesburglast_img read more

SA’s new Antarctic research ship

first_imgThe new vessel will replace the 31-year-old South African Agulhas, due for retirement in 2012.   (Image: South African Agency for Scienceand Technology Advancement)   MEDIA CONTACTS • Zolile Nqyai Department of Environmental Affairs +27 21 402 3702 [email protected] RELATED ARTICLES • Big break for biotech in SA • New biosphere reserve for SA • South Africa protects its oceans • SA medics in Antarctic rescueNosimilo NdlovuThe South African Department of Environmental Affairs and Finnish shipbuilder STX Finland Oy have signed R1.3-billion (US$171-million) agreement to build a new Antarctic supply and research ship for the country. The department signed and announced the deal on 17 November at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town, in the Western Cape province. The currently unnamed vessel will replace the 31-year-old SA Agulhas, which will retire in 2012.According to the department, the new vessel will be “one of a kind” designed to carry cargo, passengers, helicopters and fuel; while serving as a research base for the three South African stations on Marion Island, Gough Island and Antarctica. The three stations fall under the South African National Antarctic Programme (Sanap) which government has set up to carry out research in the area. They are managed by the Department of Environmental Affairs’ Antarctic and Islands directorate.“The new vessel is vital for South Africa to maintain its strategic presence in the Southern Ocean and Antarctica,” the department’s research chief, Dr Johan Augustyn, said at the announcement.“We are looking at our future role in researching climate change in the Southern and Indian oceans. We wanted a ship with more laboratories that can accommodate other branches of science. We are hoping to do marine biology research with the new vessel,” he said. The new vessel will enable scientists to lower sophisticated probes into the depths of the ocean to measure water temperature, depth, oxygen, light and the presence of phytoplankton. The equipment stores data so that it can be compared over a number of years, giving insight into temperature changes driven by climate change.Scientists aboard the new vessel will also be able to assess changes in the distribution of certain ocean plants and animals that depend on a particular temperature range for survival. A proliferation of tropical species and a decline of cold water ones could be an indication of global warming.Satellites and ocean buoys can collect similar data, but the advantage of a research vessel is that it is very flexible – it can move scientists around with ease, enabling them to use a far wider range of sensors and techniques.Mega-icebreakerThe new, 134m-long vessel will be built at the Rauma shipyard in Finland. Rauma director Timo Suistio said the design and engineering will start immediately and construction will begin in September 2010. “The ship will be delivered to the South African Department of Environmental Affairs in spring 2012,” he said.Suistio said it was the company’s first ship-building project for a South African client and part of its long-term strategy to break into the African market. “Our aim is to make this vessel an example of our ability and use it as a reference for future jobs,” he said.Augustyn said the new vessel will be able to break through thicker ice at higher speeds than South Africa’s current research ship. “It will be a more effective tool and not cost much more to maintain than the SA Agulhas, as it has three times as much power and is more fuel-efficient,” he said. The icebreaker will have shelter and a landing area for two Puma class helicopters, a gym, a library and a small hospital. It will accommodate 45 crew members and 100 passengers or researchers. The SA Agulhas currently carries cargo and passengers to the island of Tristan da Cunha in the south Atlantic Ocean around September each year. The ship drops off the tourists and then moves on to Gough island to deliver cargo and exchange research staff, giving the public an opportunity stay on Tristan for up to three weeks. It is expected that the new ship will offer a similar service.Greater capacityEquipped with 800 square metres of research space, the vessel will act as a mobile laboratory for scientists and be able to collect weather data for meteorological institutions around the world. It is hoped that the top-class facilities will attract foreign experts and help South Africa rebuild its deep sea research capacity, which has dwindled over the years due to a lack of infrastructure and shortage of scientists. Many have left to work overseas or moved into the private sector.“The new ship, apart from its supply function, will be a catalyst to rebuild the deep-sea oceanography capacity in South Africa,” said Henry Valentine, Antarctica and Islands director for the department.“This will also attract participation of international scientists and researchers, thus significantly contributing to research projects addressing new challenges and changing interests [such as climate change],” he said.Allocating this level of funding for the new vessel, despite current pressures, reflects the South African government’s commitment to the Sanap, said Valentine.last_img read more

Utility Buys Champion Decathlon House

first_imgLast summer, as the 2011 Solar Decathlon team representing University of Maryland toiled away at its contest entry, a 920-sq.-ft. one-bedroom consisting of two “shed” modules arranged in a staggered, split-butterfly configuration, the hope was that the building would eventually be sold to a couple whose annual income was in the $75,000-to-$115,000 range. The house, known as WaterShed, has since acquired high-tech celebrity as the overall winner of the Decathlon and very recently attracted a buyer, energy company Pepco, whose annual income falls well above the recommended range. As University of Maryland announced this week, WaterShed will be moved to one of Pepco’s facilities in Maryland’s Montgomery County, where it will serve as both an educational showcase and research tool. The university will partner with the utility on the building’s operation and help monitor its performance.A living laboratoryIn its “Where We Live” blog, the Washington Post noted that the home sold for $200,000. The purchase agreement calls for assistance from the WaterShed team in transporting the house to the Montgomery County site, although Pepco will pay disassembly, transport, reassembly, and site costs. Team members also will serve as docents at the house once it opens for public display. The house features 2×10 solid and 9.25-in. engineered wood for the floor framing, 1-1/8-in. tongue-and-groove Avantech floor sheathing, and 6 in. of Demilec Heatlok Soy closed-cell spray foam, bringing the system to R-39. Exterior walls are built with a hybrid system of standard stick framing and heavy timber framing, two layers of 2-in. extruded polystyrene over 2×6 tongue-and-groove sheathing, and 5.5 in. of Demilec Sealection in the stud bays, bringing the entire wall system to R-44.5. The roofs for both modules are insulated with 3.5 in. of Demilec Heatlok Soy and 4 in. of polyisocyanurate on the exterior, bringing them to R-57.26. Thermo-treated wood is used for the siding and decking.Once the Solar Decathlon began last fall in Washington, WaterShed led the competition most of the way, scoring more than 90 points out of a possible 100 in eight of the contest’s 10 competition categories.last_img read more
