The pre-packed bread market is worth £1.8bn but independents and symbol group stores account for just 3% of this. Choosing the right charter for growth

first_img ShareShareSharePrintMailGooglePinterestDiggRedditStumbleuponDeliciousBufferTumblr continue reading » Some see field of membership as an antiquated notion, no longer reasonable in the modern financial services marketplace. Others embrace it as a defining characteristic of what makes credit unions different (and better) than banks. Choosing and then diving in deep to a niche market can create excellent member relationships if you choose it, while others prefer to cast a wider net. When credit unions were permitted expanded FOM authorities in 1998 under HR 1151, the Credit Union Membership Access Act, the result was a mixed bag, opening up authorities for certain credit unions while closing doors to others. Thus, the community charter was born, and some credit unions assumed because members of the community already knew what a great deal they were and would come flocking in. This was not the case, and growth strategies have had to evolve. In fact, $1.8 billion South Carolina Federal Credit Union, North Charleston, tried on the community charter in March 2003, which allowed it to serve a number of underserved areas. However, Chief Strategy Officer Troy Hall, Ph.D., CUDE, says the community field of membership did not serve the credit union as well as planned. Like an increasing number of credit unions, South Carolina FCU decided to convert back from a community charter to the less restrictive federal multiple common bond charter, which allows credit unions to serve an unlimited number of communities, employers and associations.last_img read more

Former Los Angeles County Sheriff speaks to students at NIACC

first_imgMASON CITY — The former Sheriff of Los Angeles County was in Mason City on Monday to talk about the challenges facing law enforcement around the country.Jim McDonnell began his law enforcement career in 1981, serving 29 years with the Los Angeles Police Department. He served five years as the Long Beach Police Chief before being elected in 2014 as the first Sheriff in 100 years to be elected from outside the LA Sheriff’s Department.McDonnell says one of the big issues being dealt with by law enforcement is dealing with people in a mental health crisis and he feels Southern California can share some ideas on how to address that. “And we’re seeing that with greater and greater frequency, both in the street and in the custody environment. It’s a real challenge, you know, police officers deputy sheriff’s are not trained psychologist or psychiatrists. They do the very best job they can with the training they have, but it’s a very challenging situation that we insert them into on a regular basis. To be able to pair up a mental health clinician with the deputy or an officer, we get tremendous return-on-investment on doing those things. We’ve done those in California for a number of years, we dramatically expanded that recently.”McDonnell says social media has made a big impact on law enforcement’s job.  “Social media, you try and get in front of a story to be able to share what happened you know what this much knowledge as you can. With the public today in today’s environment with social media, you get to a scene, and before you have the yellow tape up, it’s already out there, viral in some cases. A snippet of a piece of what happened, a story is being told, so you have to try and do the best you can to be able to shed light on it and to be able to educate the public as to what actually happened, to the degree that you can in a situation like that.”McDonnell says it’s a tough time to be in policing and a tough time to be a younger person growing up in America. He says the divisiveness that we see is challenging on all levels.  “We need to work to come together, and what I spoke about this morning to the student group, was each and everyone is a leader and we all have an ability to make an impact beyond ourselves on other people, and to stay positive, to be able to use the values that were instilled in them as young people to be able to guide their life moving forward, and then to be able to share that with as many people as they can. We are all leaders, we all have the ability to be able to truly make a difference.”McDonnell says police are not going to be effective without the help and support of the community, and community policing will continue to be a critical component of public safety.  “The more that we can talk about why we do, what we do, we can do a better job I think across the board explaining why we do, what we do, or what we did, and from the community standpoint we all have to be in this together. Our communities are only as strong as they are safe. The bottom line is that the government’s primary responsibility is to provide for the safety of people who live in that community, so by working together we get tremendous return on investment. By trying to do it alone or trying to demonize any part of the community, including the police, we’re missing the boat on what we could be as a community.”McDonnell spoke to students throughout the day Monday at North Iowa Area Community College and held an open lecture on Monday afternoon.last_img read more

Barca seek Super Cup tonic to Neymar hangover

first_imgNew Barca coach Ernesto Valverde.Barcelona, Spain | AFP | Barcelona host rivals Real Madrid in the first leg of the Spanish Super Cup on Sunday (2000GMT) badly in need of a morale-boosting win following the world record sale of Neymar to Paris Saint-Germain.Despite banking 222 million euros ($261 million) for the Brazilian, Barca’s scattergun approach to finding a replacement has so far been unsuccessful with bids for Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho and Ousmane Dembele of Borussia Dortmund so far rebuffed.New Barca coach Ernesto Valverde must therefore try to down the European and Spanish champions with a weaker squad than the one which missed out to Real for the La Liga title last season. However, Barca did manage to beat Madrid without the then suspended Neymar the last time the sides met in competitive action back in April as Lionel Messi won an incredible encounter 3-2 with the last kick of the game. The Catalans also edged last month’s Miami friendly between the two in Neymar’s last game for Barca 3-2.Valverde’s men completed a perfect pre-season on the field with a fourth straight win by sweeping aside Chapecoense 5-0 on Monday in a match to raise funds for the stricken Brazilian club who lost 19 players and 24 club officials in a plane crash last year.“We’ve had a good pre-season and we are coming into the game in good condition,” said Valverde.“But on Sunday the real thing starts, with a competitive game and a title at stake against our biggest rivals.”Gerard Deulofeu was handed Neymar’s role alongside Messi and Luis Suarez up front against Chapecoense on his return to the club after spells at Everton and AC Milan. And the Spanish international took his chance with a goal and two assists in just 45 minutes on the field. “It is always a pleasure to play here and even more so with these players,” said Deulofeu.Valverde is likely to stick with Deulofeu, but the former Athletic Bilbao coach could also strengthen Barca’s midfield by sacrificing a forward to add Sergi Roberto to the normal midfield three of Sergio Busquets, Ivan Rakitic and Andres Iniesta.– Ronaldo return an option –Despite failing to win any of their pre-season games, Madrid started the new campaign as they ended last season with another trophy as Zinedine Zidane’s men proved too strong for Manchester United to win the UEFA Super Cup 2-1 on Tuesday.Casemiro and Isco were on target as Madrid’s midfield dazzled in Skopje, Macedonia, but Zidane will be forced into at least one change from the side that started in midweek as Luka Modric is suspended.Should Zidane wish to maintain the 4-4-2 system he has utilised to huge success in 2017, Mateo Kovacic is the favourite to replace his Croatian teammate in midfield. However, Modric’s absence increases Cristiano Ronaldo’s chances of returning to the Madrid starting XI after making just a brief cameo appearance as a substitute against his former club in Macedonia.Ronaldo only returned to training with his teammates last weekend on their return from a tour of the USA having been given an extended break following Portugal’s participation in the Confederations Cup and a court appearance in Madrid over allegations of tax evasion.Share on: WhatsApplast_img read more
