Commentary Referees not perfect mistakes happen

Referees have never been perfect — they are not perfect now, and they never will be. The nature of the job lends itself to occasional mistakes.Especially at full speed, how is an individual expected to get every single call correct? At the end of the day, they simply cannot. The New England Patriots lost to the Carolina Panthers, 24-20, Monday after what is being referred to as a “questionable” call on the game’s final play.Considering the media reaction, I am slightly surprised the entire state of Massachusetts has not broken into a full-fledged riot. Not only did starting quarterback Tom Brady track down the officials after the play to complain, but his backup Ryan Mallett tried to get in on the action as well. When you see players, especially one as well respected around the league as Brady, complaining like that, one can only imagine the words coming out of the mouths of fans that watched the game.Patriots fans should be thankful they are not Green Bay Packers fans. During the infamous replacement ref period of the 2012 NFL season, the Packers lost to the Seattle Seahawks Sept. 24, 2012, after fill-ins awarded Seattle a touchdown on the game’s final play. Not only should the ruling have been an interception in favor of the Packers, but the refs also missed an indisputable pass interference call.Every team, athlete and fan has found themselves on the “wrong” side of a “poor” call at some point. It is part of the game, not something that should be welcomed, but must be accepted. At the end of the 2002-03 football season, Ohio State won the National Championship after a late flag saved the Buckeyes’ lives and gave them another chance. The Miami Hurricanes were already celebrating when the yellow speck flew across the screen, signaling Glenn Sharpe for pass interference against Chris Gamble in the end zone. You can find Hurricanes fans complaining to this day, but the call happened, the game eventually ended, and OSU won. Still, almost 11 years later complaints can be heard, but that was a championship game, not a random regular season game moving their record to 7-3, which is now where the Patriots’ sit.New England fans have to take some perspective when looking at the call — it was questionable, not wrong. The call could have easily gone either way, and there is no way to prove the Patriots would have won the game had they received a favorable decision.Much worse things have happened in sports. In 1990 Colorado received a fifth down, allowing them to beat Missouri 33-31. At the 1972 Olympics, the Soviet basketball team was magically awarded extra time, leading to the United States’ first loss in the sport’s Olympic history. At the end of the day, the call in Monday’s Patriots-Panthers game might have been wrong, but it happened. The complaints need to end, especially since the game is mostly insignificant.Questionable calls are a part of sport, and they will be forever. While that is not a good thing, it has to be accepted. Repeated complaints do no good for anyone and simply act as an annoyance to the outside world. read more

Simeone satisfied with Atleticos chaotic draw with Valencia

first_imgAtletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone was “satisfied” to scrap a 1-1 draw at ValenciaThings got off to a bright for last week’s UEFA Super Cup winners when Angel Correa handed them the lead with an assist from Antoine Griezmann. But a mistake by new captain Diego Godin enabled Rodrigo Moreno to volley in an equaliser for Valencia. It proved to be a tense encounter between the two sides with both desperate to get their respective La Liga campaigns off to a winning start.“Both teams went to win, the match was open at the end and there was a lot of chaos which I didn’t like,” said Simeone, according to Marca.“A match with Valencia will always have a strong profile, we are similar teams with different nuances.“I’m left satisfied, we put in a controlled performance after playing 120 minutes.”Sergio Ramos, Real MadridZidane reveals Sergio Ramos injury concern for Real Madrid Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Zinedine Zidane has put Sergio Ramos’ availability for Real Madrid’s trip to Sevilla next weekend in doubt after withdrawing him against Levante. The Argentine is not surprised by the improvement that Valencia has undergone through his counterpart Marcelino Garcia Toral.Last season Los Che collected 27 more points than their previous campaign and finished in fourth place in the La Liga standings.“When we came to play here last year I told my players that Valencia would fight for important places, and I wasn’t mistaken,” he intimated.“This year they will continue to grow, they have added players.“It won’t be easy to take points from this stadium.”Atletico will next face Rayo Vallecano on Saturday for their first home game of the new league season.last_img read more

Statement from Rep Theis on auto insurance reform legislation falling short

first_img State Rep. Lana Theis, of Brighton, chair of the House Insurance Committee, issued a statement expressing her disappointment in the House voting down House Bill 5013“I am extremely disappointed that House Bill 5013, which makes much-needed changes to the current auto no-fault insurance system, fell short in the House.“I do not understand why some of my colleagues voted against no-fault reform which 80 percent of drivers across the state said was needed, and would have given drivers hundreds of dollars in premium savings. The very same people they represent – the people living paycheck to paycheck, facing financial hardships due to out-of-control insurance rates – will continue to be hurt by this broken system.“It remains clear just how much special interest groups politicize this very important issue. They profit off the status quo, make a quick buck and pretend like they have the interest of people in mind.“Hard-working families will have to continue to choose between putting food on the table or driving illegally, ensuring Michigan’s uninsured driver rate will continue to climb and ensuring all drivers across Michigan will continue to see their auto insurance premiums rise.“It’s been over 40 years, and still, nothing has been done to change a system that only benefits big players such as hospitals, trial lawyers and other well-funded special interest groups. It’s obvious, once again, nothing has changed in Lansing on this particular issue.“This legislation was never going to take away the unlimited personal injury protection coverage from anyone. It was simply giving drivers a choice – a choice they’ve never been able to make.“I want to thank all my colleagues who voted ‘yes’ on this measure – all of who had the same desire to deliver real, viable rate relief to their residents across the state.“With this legislation falling short, here’s what will happen:“Hospitals will continue to charge more for auto accident patients, trial lawyers will continue to make lavish livings off court cases, courtrooms will continue to be clogged, unlimited health care coverage will continue to be mandated and most importantly, auto insurance rates will only continue to go up.” Categories: Theis News 06Nov Statement from Rep.
