first_imgNews HondurasAmericas Follow the news on Honduras Receive email alerts TV presenter and radio producer Nery Francisco Soto was gunned down outside his home in Olanchito, in the northern department of Yoro, on the night of 14 August, becoming the seventh journalist to be murdered in Honduras since the start of 2014.Unidentified gunmen shot him as he was putting his motorcycle inside his garage. The Olanchito authorities have ruled out robbery as a motive because his killers took nothing.Colleagues say Soto, a Canal 23 TV anchor and co-producer of Radio Full FM’s “Cuarto Poder” programme, had been investigating alleged corruption involving the mayor of the nearby city of Yoro, who is currently wanted for suspected money laundering.According to the National Commission for Human Rights (CONADEH), there have been 47 murders of journalists in Honduras since 2003, of which 91 per cent have gone unpunished.“The persistence of violence against journalists in Honduras shows that those responsible for these crimes stop at nothing to silence the sources of troublesome reporting,” said Camille Soulier, the head of the Reporters Without Borders Americas desk.“The authorities must take urgent action and must give themselves the necessary resources to end the impunity prevailing in most of these crimes, which affect those who dare to investigate sensitive news stories.”Honduras is ranked 129th out of 180 countries in the 2014 Reporters Without Borders press freedom index. Schweitzer, and his wife Maria Schweitzer, spearheaded a fundraiser to benefit Foothill Unity Center’s Pediatric Mobile Dental Clinic. The Circle of Friends event was hosted on Saturday afternoon, June 25, at the Pasadena home of Annette and Sheldon Bull and was able to raise more than $21,000 for non-profit community support organization that distributes food and provides services to very low-income families and individuals in the San Gabriel Valley. The donations came from an intimate Circle of Friends of about 30 guests. Don and Maria Schweitzer first thanked Annette and Sheldon Bull for hosting the annual Circle of Friends Fundraiser for the second year then reported on the encouraging results.“Each year we host this event, we’re on eggshells leading up to the event not knowing if we’ll be able to reach our goal of surpassing the previous year’s donations to benefit Foothill Unity Center’s Pediatric Mobile Dental Clinic,” the Schweitzers said. “This year we were blown away by the outpour of support. Within the first five minutes, we raised $15,000 and went on to raise over $21,000 for this worthy cause. We are so grateful for the continued and new support of friends who attended the event.”The campaign continues through August 3 to raise more money for the Mobile Dental Clinic. One hundred percent of the proceeds go directly to the clinic, Don and Maria Schweitzer said. They hope to present a check for $25,000 to the Foothill Unity Center at their annual Back to School Event in August.Founded in 1980, Foothill Unity Center is the primary provider of food, case management/crisis help, and access to health care resources across eleven San Gabriel Valley cities: Pasadena, Altadena, South Pasadena, Sierra Madre, Arcadia, Monrovia, Bradbury, Duarte, Azusa, Baldwin Park and Irwindale.Seventy-nine percent of the Center’s clients are at or below the National Poverty Level. Over the last five years, the number of people served by the organization has more than tripled. The federally designated California Action Agency for the Foothill Area operates locations in Monrovia and Pasadena. To donate online, visit this link: Mobile Dental Clinic events may be viewed through this video link: more information about Foothill Unity, please visit their website at center column 3 Pasadena Fundraiser Raises More than $21,000 for Foothill Unity Center From STAFF REPORTS Published on Thursday, July 14, 2016 | 2:27 pmcenter_img Pasadena’s ‘626 Day’ Aims to Celebrate City, Boost Local Economy HerbeautyKate Beckinsale Was Shamed For Being “Too Old” To Wear A BikiniHerbeautyHerbeautyHerbeauty6 Strong Female TV Characters Who Deserve To Have A SpinoffHerbeautyHerbeautyHerbeautyNow She’s 19 – Look At Her Transformation!
