Boosters install new officers The San Pedro Pirate Booster Club held its 49th annual Installation of Officers banquet Dec. 4 at Ante’s Restaurant in San Pedro. Edward Grajeda was named the Booster Club President for 2008 and new board of directors and officers were installed. An artistic rendering of a tile mural project to honor former USC football player Mario Danelo was also presented at the event. Former booster club presidents, including Matty Domancich, Emil Erdelez, Dave Trujillo, Rick Trujillo, Frank Baca, Richard Wagoner and Bill Seixas attended the event. Seventh Street Elementary School Pre-kindergarten program to start The school is accepting applications for its School Readiness and Language Development Program, which provides pre-kindergarten students with oral language education in speech, listening and vocabulary. The program, which is scheduled to begin in February, will operate Monday to Thursday with morning and afternoon sessions. To qualify for enrollment, students must have been 4 years old by Dec. 2 and have a parent or guardian available to attend mandatory monthly parent-teacher conferences and parent education classes, and volunteer in the classroom. Local high schools Elks giving award money The San Pedro Elks Lodge will give away $6,000 in award money to six high school seniors as part of the Elks National Foundation 2008 Most Valuable Student scholarship contest. Local winners have the opportunity to advance through the district, state and national contests and win scholarships ranging from $4,000 to $60,000 awarded over a four-year period. The student must be a high school senior and a United States citizen to be eligible for the local contest. Applicants will be judged on scholarship, leadership and financial need. You’re all set! Thirty-one high school bands and drill teams participated in the event and were judged in the areas of music performance, general effect and visual performance. Awards were also given for top auxiliary (drill team, dance or flags) units as well. The competition was hosted by East Los Angeles College in Monterey Park. Tree trimming to affect parking Tree trimming is scheduled to take place at San Pedro High School next Monday through Friday. San Pedro High School Band takes 2nd in competition The school band placed second at the Los Angeles Unified School District’s annual Band and Drill Team Championship. The 110-member band performed music from “West Side Story” at the Dec. 8 event.
