Someone must have told Lexar that I’m just about the world’s number one “How It’s Made” fan because the company put out video that walks us through their factory and shows us how a number of their products are manufactured. From SD cards to CF cards to memory sticks, we get to see each product put together, tested, and packaged before being shipped to resellers around the world. It’s a well done video with lots of explanation so you are sure to pick up some interesting facts along the way. For example, did you know that Micron is the only company that manufacturers memory chips in the United States? While the manufacturing process is as cool as you might expect, complete with lots of robots and lasers, the testing is even more fascinating. Each product (at least is looks that way) is tested before it’s shipped out, which means Lexar needs tools that can test dozens of product at once, like this:The video notes that every speed-rated card is tested to ensure that it matches its promised specifications. This testing is just one reason why a nice memory card from Lexar (or Sandisk, etc.) costs more than a no-name card with the same capacity.Give it a watch, it’s definitely worth the six-and-a-half minutes.
